Watch Series The Last of Us – Twenty years after modern civilization was destroyed. Joel, a tough survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of the oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey, as the two of them must traverse the US and depend on one another for survival. Let's take a moment to consider the prologue to “Last of Us,” a bit of heavy lifting done so elegantly and thoughtfully that it takes multiple viewings to fully appreciate. Right at the top, it addresses the biggest meta element that works both for and against the show, the idea that the word “pandemic” has boomed over the years since the original game came out a decade ago. It falls within the notion of cordyceps as a mundane possibility rather than underlining with a giant red pen. That gave scientists a basis for hinting at the mess that was coming, rather than having some FEDRA henchmen do it in retrospect.
It shouldn't work, leaving Big Head and Jonathan Carnahan to outline the stakes of the societal collapse we'll see in waves throughout this season. But the combo of “We lost” and the staggered, cut-to-commercial-break reaction that goes right into the opening credits is a bit of TV framing, which should give viewers as much confidence as it does anxiety. Just as games find success by following the natural outcome and consequences of that collapse, this opening episode finds a lot of value in placing Plague Day in 2003 and what it might have resulted from. Of course a high school student living in Bush-era paranoia would have greeted the possibility of the end of the world with “Is that a terrorist?” Of course the soundtrack for The Last Normal Breakfast Ever is Dido's song. Everything was normal until it wasn't, the fact that this show was effectively ripped from the last few years we've been together.
In directing this episode, Mazin was smart about what to take from the story of the past collapse. Gradual cracking in the dam before the whole thing explodes, police cars passing through windows nearby, neighbors giving someone a try on how to deal with the "enemy". But the really effective touch here is what he leaves in the distance. Just getting a glimpse of what happened to the neighbors after Tommy (Gabriel Luna) ran over them is terrifying. It's better to tell you everything you need to know about how this is spreading than to see what Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Tommy saw in town or get a TV news bulletin that explains it all.
